round out your collection
  reviewed by: Martin Helms

This Refill was perfect for me as it really helped my round out my collection with tons of authentic "world" percussion instruments. All of the kits are immediately playable and very expressive. It's amazing what a difference in character these drums introduce into an otherwise generic drum beat sound.

All I can say is WOW!

I went out on a limb buying this refill when I was in need of some "spice" for a beat I was working on. I was referred to this collection by a friend and boy was I impressed. All the samples were recorded well and were very usable. The different drums and shakers were just what I needed to finish off my track.

World Percussion – Refill #13

If you look at the NNXT and .rex list you’ll see a wide variety of “world” percussion sounds. There are the usual Latin instruments as well as West African and some North African/Middle Eastern (i.e. Dumbek). There is even an Irish Bohdran. There are also a number of shakers.

But what you don’t see on the list is the variety within each sound. You need multi-hits for realism, and the refill gives them to you. For example, the shaker programs give you a variety of shakes and even sometimes a click. Let me give another example. If I counted correctly, African Djembe.sxt contains 30 different stereo samples. The samples are recorded pretty dry, and have a nice presence to them.

The .rex files have more room ambience to them. They are, generally, simple loops of one or two instruments that will fill in when building a mix. They integrate well with the NNXT programs.

Lastly, there are about 25 Redrum programs that utilize some of the same samples as the NNXT programs. I’m not a big Redrum fan, so I haven’t used them much. But they are there if you want them.

If you are a Reason user and you need “world” percussion sounds, this should be well worth you money.
